Grow and harvest the ingredients needed for tea, and then mix them together in an unusual tea-making contraption. Along the way, speak with the many travelers who pass through the shop, learn their stories and make tea that’s just right for them.

Because that’s all we can do, isn’t it? We can’t control everything. We can’t control who stays and who leaves. We can’t control how people feel about us, how our stories with them end, or whether they end at all. The only thing we have power over is ourselves. That’s the lesson Wanderstop leaves us with.

The warmth that emanates from Wanderstop isn’t that of a warm hug. It’s the warmth that spreads through your fingers from a hot cup of tea, made by someone you love, while you sit in their kitchen with tears welling up in the back of your throat.

To do that, you’ll have to grow your own ingredients in a small garden plot outside the tea shop (though you can technically plant anywhere). You’re given a field book, a limited amount of seeds, and some gentle parenting from Boro, but the rest is yours to figure out.

But the refreshingly strange thing is that there is no tangible incentive to do so. The weeds pose no real danger to your garden, and while walking through them can slow you down, they don’t need to be sheared in order to pass.

You realize—this isn’t a cozy retreat. It’s a forced retreat. The game doesn’t ease you into relaxation. It shoves you into it, trapping you inside a world that Alta herself struggles to accept. And that’s when it really sinks in. This is not a game about running away to start over. This is a game about being made to stop.

Not literally. But emotionally. Mentally. She has been alone in every misfortune, every hardship, every moment where she needed someone and had pelo one. She was left to navigate her emotions on her own. To push down her struggles because that’s what was expected of her.

Because, pelo. It’s not okay. I want to know. I was invested in his story. I wanted to see him succeed, I wanted to keep teasing him about how lame of a knight he was, I wanted him to continue being a part of Elevada’s journey.

As you tidy the leaves and weeds, you do have a small chance of finding something hidden underneath the clutter. Dozens of little trinkets can be uncovered while you clean, including colorful new tea mugs, teddy bears, Wanderstop Gameplay and even lost packages. The catch, however, is that you can’t keep these trinkets as the roughly 15-hour campaign progresses, and the story directly addresses why in a clever way.

As I said, this is not a story about burn out alone, but an insightful exploration of why we often burn ourselves out over and over again. Maybe you’re familiar with the feeling: You push yourself day after day not just to meet deadlines or complete projects, but to maintain that control you need over your life to stay on the right course.

I want to know that they all reunite in the real world. I want to know that Elevada gets to see Gerald again, and the Demon Hunter, and Nana and Monster, and Zenith, and Boro. I want to know what happens to them. But it’s out of my hands. And that’s the whole point.

A book. And it worked. Another time, a customer asked me to put what I valued most into their cup. I stared at my inventory for a long time, then went over to where Alta’s sword lay outside the shop, wondering if I should actually do it.

Each one of these games fulfills what each and every one of us (well, at least me and everyone I know) secretly dreams of. The real fantasy isn't magic or alchemy or secret woodland creatures—it’s escaping the clutches of capitalism.
